These articles are addressing the relationship between the arts and COVID-19. In the second article we read, it highlights how in moments of crisis the world turns to the arts and cultural experiences. I’m sure we have all noticed the rise of arts/cultural involvement since this all started. More and more people are participating in the arts through watching movies, creating sidewalk chalk art, creating music, etc. However, though the interest is on the rise, the artists and creators within are creative economy are closing shows, museums and concerts because of this. These articles are a call to action to engage in culture and support the people who facilitate it as a profession. My two questions after reading are: How have you engaged in arts/cultures in ways that you normally are unable to since going into quarantine? And, how have you supported culture in your own community?
I mostly focused on the second article as I thought it highlighted the current importance of the arts in a more tangible way (especially with the pandemic). I thought it was really interesting, though, that the article talks about the arts in a synonymous comparison to culture in the very first paragraph, but describes arts as important to a thriving culture throughout the rest of it. I thought this brought back parts of some of our previous discussions about the similarities and differences between the two and wondered how we, as arts advocates, can describe that difference to the public in a logical way. I liked that the article also pointed out all these different ways we can connect with culture online, but suprised that I didn’t know about them even as involved as I am. Do you all think that there are some ways that access is limited, like the lack of advertising/knowledge? How can we change that?
