Social Media in Role of Activism

There is no denying that impact social media in raising awareness of social issues. Social network activism is helping many countries solving most of the issues. In this essay Gladwell, Malcolm and Essige, Kate wrote articles about the social network activism. Social media played big activism tools that helped individuals move towards the goals they need to achieve. However, social media can effect student activism at the same time could develop slacktivism.
Social media helped developed the idea and fasten the process for social change; among with that it showed the difference between the past and the present in the role of activism. The author Gladwell in her article “Small Change”, she wrote about the role of twitter and Facebook in revolution movement. She states, “Facebook activism success not by motivating people to do things that people do when they are not engage to make real change”. The power of social media is impose change in community, but it will require little effort from them to reach the necessary change. Although, the presence of week relationship ties effect social media activism, according to the author, “The platform of social media are built around weak ties… people you may never met… for keeping up with the people you would otherwise be able to stay in touch with that why you could have thousands of friends on Facebook you will never would in real life”. The number of friend on Facebook could it’s a part of the weak ties which they are the edges that occur among hubs having a place to different communities. Revolution movement according to Gladwell was present in both physical and online ways. People used all their effort in the past and present to achieve their goals. Activism is present where is whoever doing it capable of same duties that they need to come up with results for change. For example, “Facebook and like are the tools for building network which is the opposite in structure and character of the hierarchies” (Gladwell). All the movement that happened in the past they required time, gathering, and leadership to be achieved. These days having all these steps done online which minimized the time and shorten the process which is all they lead to one goal is social change. To sum up, Activism if need to take place well be done whether physically or online.
The rise of social media has incredibly affect student activism, moreover it gives emerge to slacktivism. The author Essig, Kate in her article “How social media hurts students activism”. She point about how the social media is affecting student activism in large numbers. As of her illustration, “Student activism can use social media to promote their organization online”. Social network helped student who doesn’t have enough time by providing them all the required tools and all necessary steps to complete it online and move forward to achieve a change. Additionally, slacktivism can be an opportunity to earn more mindfulness and in few cases it can indeed make so much awareness that increase donations. Especially she mentioned, “We found that when consumers give public support they are no more likely to provide more meaningful support for the cause that if someone was just randomly asked for large request”. In addition, sharing posts on social media shows people what they care about and what the change that really needed is. Dixon said “How people hear about causes and how people decide to support and care about them it comes a lot more often from their friends”. Social media can be a factor for building strong relationship and not being fundraising tools. Friends on social media are the key to motivate you for success and change. Their good feedback what motivate people to make the change that can spreadall around the world. Briefly, social media helped and defined student need. Also, slacktivism can be determine activism if it used right. It’s unfair to write every one of social media as slacktivism.

In the final analysis, there is no doubt that effect internet based life in bringing issues to light of social issues. Activism occurred in the past and present in both ways people used their offered either physically or on social and they both came up to one goal which is making change in the society. In other place, activism helped student and took place as slacktivism, but in some situation was done right and changed the idea of slacktivism. To summarize, social media permits people to organize, arrange, and share their passionate almost in the way that wasn’t accessible to student protest for movement change within 60s.
